My lad recently became a teenager. Yeah, pray for me. But it got me to thinking about the toys enjoyed by them, in comparison to myself. I list my top 5 toys of my youth (in no particular order), what are yours, and why?
1.Transformers - coupled with the TV program I had a huge collection, and used to love changing them from robot to vehicle or otherwise. Favourites were Soundwave (tape recorder), Starscream (F15 jet) and of course the mighty Devastator who was made up of 5 mini robots/construction vehicles! Honourable mention goes to the Dinobots. 2. Lego - come on now, who doesn't love Lego??!! (no,not Legos, it's not sodding plural like that). My favourite themes were Space, and Fire & Rescue (still love Lego... I don't think you can ever out grow it).
3. Micro Machines - tiny little cars and vehicles! I used to love these, even had tiny aircraft and a storage box shaped like an aircraft carrier!
4.Star Wars figures and vehicles by Kenner. What's not to love about being able to play with your own Wookiee?
5. ViewMaster - put in the circular slideshow in the viewmaster, hold up and see images of all sorts from your favourite tv shows, films and places. Loved this.
I of course speak from a boy's perspective, at the time (80s), there was very much a distinction in the shops with blue and pink aisles, unfortunately. Although I did like Cabbage Patch Kids, Polly Pocket, and She-Ra to play along with He-Man and Skeletor...
Did anyone ever have one of these? I remembered having this exact one. Played it for hours before I got a Super Nintendo.
I think we sold it for a couple of quid at a car boot sale. Just seen them on EBay for over £700 quid 😖
Here's a robot I built from the kit. I modified the design with tank tracks, which were in a previous Mindstorms set I bought years ago.
I bought my daughter the Lego Robot Inventor Kit, which is a Technics set you can build and program robots. This is how I know for sure that she's not into computers and tech. Because it really doesn't get much cooler than this.
So what do you think I did with that set? Yup, play with it myself.
ooh good thread. Here's my 5:-
Action Man. We had just about every available accessory, including the armoured car and tank. Flippin awesome! Must have given my parents ideas for many Christmasses.
Lego. What can I say, probably one of the greatest toys ever. And back then all we had were the basic bricks, not the special sets they do these days. You had to really use your imagination.
Train set. Not Hornby, but a bigger size track, that I used to build between bedrooms and across the landing. It had these switches that could reverse the direction of the train.
Snooker table. Probably the greatest Christmas present surprise for me and my brother. Not a full size one haha! It was on the dining room table. I remember that Christmas, we'd opened all our presents in the living room, and my Mum said put the kettle on. We went into the dining room and saw the table. Wow! They never did get that cup of tea :)
Toy cars. I had a huge collection of Dinky toys and other types. I used to put them in long lines. I'd get upset if someone moved any of them, and they were often left in place overnight. My parents were very tolerant.
Hounerable mention to Airfix and Scalectrix. Also had a games console, but we are talking pre Nintendo, it was very primitive and played games like Pong, and Space Invaders.
Great thread! Great selection of toys too!
Here’s mine. In no particular order…
1) Lego - Yep, I loved this one too. I still do actually. Lego is for adults too. I recent years I’ve built the Apollo Saturn V rocket and some Star Wars helmets. My Darth Vader was recently blown off a window sill and smashed to bits. Need to put it back together!
When I was a child I loved the pirates theme. I had a pirate ship called the Renegade Runner. Played with it for hours.
2) Tamagotchis. These were a massive craze and all the bleeping and buzzing would drive my teachers mad. My school eventually banned them!
3) Thomas the Tank Engine - I loved that programme and loved the toys too. One of my earliest memories is my grand parents buying me a Thomas train set on the day my brother way born. I think it was used as a distraction from all the chaos around me. I was more interested in playing with that set than saying hello to my new brother!
4) Airfix model planes - I have very found memories of building these model planes with my grandad on a Saturday afternoon. He used to work away and would come home at the weekend. He would always take me to the toy shop to pick out a new model. We'd then build it with the football on in the background.
5) Super Ninetendo - Another gift from my grandad and the bane of my mums life. Me and my dad were obsessed with Super Mario. We'd spend hours trying to get to the end, driving my mum mad. In the end she took the controllers off us. My dad found them again though when she was in work.
This topic has been brilliant to comment and chat on. I am loving seeing what everyone else did and it's brought back memories on some things I had forgotten like marbels.
I used to enjoy playing with a dolls house too and when I was at junior school, at some age then had solitair. I think they give a different name for that now. The object of the game leaving the least you could on the board. One marbel ( if you had the marvel design) being the aim and if it was in the centre then you did extremely well.
I love this thread, I’m definitely going to come back later, but for now….
Hands up if you had a Wendy house ? 🙋🏻♀️🤣
Mine was a wooden one with an upstairs, it was fantastic.
I recall colouring a lot too, but also letraset rubdown transfer books, where you'd get a sheet of stencil characters in various poses, and rub over with a pencil to "stick" them to the scenes in the book. Loved these, my favourite was a Spider-Man one
Lego - loved getting creative and building things - mainly spaceships.
2. Stars Wars action figures - just because what little boy didn't love Stars Wars?
3. Mechanno - for the same reasons as Lego.
4 Tonka toys - loved the Tonka digger and dumper truck I had.
5 Marbles - would spend hours playing marbles with friends after school and on the weekends. Also played marbles whenever we could during playtime at school.
Great thread Matt, thanks for starting this. We're about to hit the teen years too, hope your boy had a great birthday.
Here's mine below, and I'm sorry but I'm not a Lego fan 😆.
Magic 8 ball
I wanted one for ages, but was told "you can only get them in America" which added to the mystery. When I finally did get one I was elated, but it was on a school trip and someone broke it.
2. Enid Blyton books
I know not a toy, but honestly, Enid Blyton was my childhood and I spent a lot of time in her various worlds.
3. Tamagotchi
Millennial childhood classic. The objective with these was working out how to put them into silent mode, then keeping them fed and watered throughout the school day.
4. A broom
When I was quite young, I had a broom as an imaginary friend. My dad made it a Sunday roast and allocated it a place at the dinner table one weekend. It was brilliant.
5. Stones
Another untypical play habit, but I used to collect stones (still do when we visit beaches). Stones are a real sensory joy for me, love collecting round ones with interesting colours etc. I used to love it when the neighbour said I could go round, as she had one of those stone filled driveways - I'd spend hours sitting there finding various treasures. I have a stone that is black and shaped like a heart (found in adulthood) which is brilliant as I often use this emoji 🖤.
Honestly, how no one worked out I was autistic until three years ago is beyond. But back then this kind of play was just 'weird' I guess.
Anyway, thanks for starting this Matt. Great thread and I look forward to seeing what others come up with too.
I had the view master too. But I can't remember what I was looking at.
2. Lego. I had different small lego sets. I didn't have a particular theme I enjoyed. I enjoyed them all and especially as the more lego pieces I had the more I could play with it and make other things.
3. My Little Pony. I was so thrilled when received those for Christmas.
4. I enjoyed playing with my cars and drawing roads on back of old wall paper to play with them on. Complete with making my own road signs too.
5. Colouring. I enjoyed colouring and drawing.
